The Loy Krathong Festival is one of the most well-known celebrations in Southeast Asia’s Thailand, where starry lanterns float gracefully on the water, creating a dazzling and romantic scene. Taipei’s annual Loy Krathong Festival will also kick off at 3:00 PM on November 17, at Xikou Pier and by the Rainbow Bridge, offering a taste of home for new immigrants in Taiwan and allowing locals to experience the lantern-floating culture without leaving the country.

This year’s lantern designs include traditional Thai-style lanterns inspired by Southeast Asian countries, as well as DIY star-shaped lanterns that both kids and adults can make together. After completing their creations, participants can write down their wishes. At 5:10 PM, the lanterns will be released by the pier using specially designed bamboo spoons — a creative approach that brings everyone closer to the riverside experience.

This year, three authentic local delicacies have been specially prepared: Vietnam’s sweet “Husband and Wife Cake” symbolizing love, Thailand’s tangy and sweet mangosteen water, and Myanmar’s simple and tasty fried bean flour. Paired with settings inspired by Ho Chi Minh City’s Pink Church, Thailand’s Railway Market, and Yangon Market, the event creates the feel of wandering foreign streets and immerses visitors in rich Southeast Asian vibes.

The event also features cultural challenge games with three levels: a fast-paced multicultural quiz, a Vietnamese shuttlecock kicking game, and an urban fun scavenger hunt. Completing all three levels earns you a mysterious, beautifully crafted small gift. Not only does it enhance your knowledge of diverse cultures, but you’ll also receive exquisite Thai-style promotional items — and the first 1,000 participants can even get a NT$50 voucher for Raohe Night Market.

In conjunction with the Loy Krathong Festival, a special cultural exhibition is being held from November 9 to 30 at the Shilin New Immigrant Center, showcasing the lantern traditions of Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. A carefully created 3D experience zone allows visitors to take photos in traditional Southeast Asian costumes, and weekend DIY lantern workshops provide an in-depth look at the lantern culture of Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia.
