According to the UK’s Daily Mail website, a 73-year-old Japanese grandmother successfully climbed Mount Everest on May 19 local time, becoming the world’s oldest female to summit, breaking her own world record set 10 years ago.

This remarkable elderly woman, Tamae Watanabe, along with four other climbers, reached the peak at nearly 8,850 meters altitude via the north side of Everest located in Tibet, China. According to officials from the Nepal Mountaineering Association on the 19th, all the climbers are in good health and are currently descending.

Watanabe and her team left their camp at an altitude of 8,300 meters on the evening of the 18th of this month, began climbing overnight, and reached the summit on the morning of the 19th. Watanabe’s success this time has broken the record she set 10 years ago as the oldest woman to reach the top.

Successfully climbing Mount Everest requires not only good physical condition but also favorable weather. Over the past week, continuously improving weather conditions have made the climbers’ efforts worthwhile. According to the Nepal Mountaineering Department, many teams have been attempting to summit from the southern side of Everest in Nepal in recent days. The first team succeeded on the 18th, and more teams are expected to reach the summit in the coming days, around the 20th.

The world’s oldest person to conquer Everest is Nepalese mountaineer Min Bahadur Sherchan, who successfully summited at the age of 76 in 2008, setting a Guinness World Record. In 2010, a 13-year-old American boy became the youngest person to reach the summit.
