Klättermusen was founded in 1984 by Peter Askulv, who is also its chief designer. Another product designer is his climbing partner. The idea came to Peter when he was battling an unexpected blizzard on a steep snowy slope. As the struggle intensified, Peter began to complain loudly that the cuffs of his windbreaker were clogged with snow, making the Velcro completely ineffective; the zipper pull was too long and lashed at his face like a whip in the strong wind; the neck of the windbreaker, worn over a helmet, had been pulled into a wind tunnel, letting freezing air rush in. The complaints turned into curses and eventually culminated in an idea that excited Peter. Not long after, Klättermusen was born.

Backpacks and bags
Today, the two designers still draw inspiration from their mountaineering experiences. The detailed designs of the products are often discussed inside tents, after which the two fly around the world to select fabrics, arrange production, and more. The company’s business management is almost entirely handled by Peter’s wife along with a few assistants. This management style bears some resemblance to many outdoor stores in China. Klättermusen primarily targets high-end customers, providing outdoor clothing and gear. The company currently achieves annual sales of 38 million Swedish kronor and has retail operations in 19 countries. Klättermusen is headquartered in Åre, Sweden, and its products are mainly sold in Sweden, Germany, Norway, Japan, and South Korea. The company places great emphasis on environmental protection.
