On the evening of May 5, 2013, the final day of the Shanghai Midi Festival, China’s foremost metal publication Heavy Music Magazine will collaborate with the Midi performance brand “Midi After Party” to bring in powerhouse American metalcore band AS I LAY DYING, together with three other rising stars from different countries — THE GHOST INSIDE, SYBREED, and THE FALLING — descending upon Shanghai to witness the ultimate evolution of metal.
As one of the global epicenters of modern heavy music, California has given birth to countless exceptional bands. These energetic, tireless young musicians have risen globally to dominate the new generation of rock. A supernova explosion occurred in the world of modern heavy music right here; they fought against the black hole while becoming one themselves; they lit the fuse with their sixth studio album "Awakened" in 2012. They are AS I LAY DYING (As I Lay Dying).
Masters of turning the stage into a battlefield, adept at all-out assaults, and armed with limitless on-stage firepower and uninterrupted energy. The band’s name is derived from William Faulkner’s groundbreaking novel of the same name. Formed in San Diego, California in 2000, AS I LAY DYING has been fully equipped with thrash and melodic metal since their debut, further enhanced with heavy breakdowns and sharp riffs as violent catalysts, propelling their power to unstoppable levels. As a pioneering force in Christian metal, this heavy outfit has, over an impressive 12-year career, preached for the divine with one hand and defied the heavens with the other. They’ve been regulars on the Billboard 200 chart; since their 2007 album "An Ocean Between Us" debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, AS I LAY DYING has achieved consistent commercial success, yet also shaken the industry with their music. They’ve headlined major festivals including Wacken, With Full Force, and Warped Tour; earned MTV2’s “Ultimate Metal God” title; had their single “Nothing Left” nominated for a Grammy; and were named “Metal Band of the Year 2012” alongside ANTHRAX and LAMB OF GOD by Loudwire. Formed in 2007, they quickly began touring with major acts such as AS I LAY DYING, A DAY TO REMEMBER, I KILLED THE PROM QUEEN, AUGUST BURNS RED, MISERY SIGNALS, BLEEDING THROUGH, PARKWAY DRIVE, and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Especially after signing with legendary label Epitaph in 2012, their album Get What You Give debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 88 and No. 8 on the Hard Rock chart — an astonishing feat that cemented their status as leaders in the metalcore scene. Subsequent national and international tours featured acts like MISS MAY I and EMMURE as openers. They’ve also received invitations to top-tier festivals around the world, including the UK’s Download Festival, France’s Hellfest, Austria’s Nova Rock, and Germany’s With Full Force. SYBREED (Doomsday Breed) hails from Switzerland. The serene air of Geneva inspired SYBREED to forge the niche genre of Death Wave. Their music blends industrial and electronic elements beneath downtuned heavy metal rhythms — today we might call it experimental or Djent. The failure of a secret experiment allowed the subject, SYBREED, to harness the powers of heavy industrial sounds and new wave music, mutating into an acoustic monster. It packs every note with highly radioactive elements; its overloaded invisible rays can obliterate your nerves and spirit. The real danger lies in how it doesn’t happen all at once. With four full-length albums under their belt, SYBREED knows how to command both clean vocals and screams, and samples — and they know that true pleasure comes from alternating tension and release. THE FALLING (The Fall)
China’s most internationally promising rising star in modern heavy music. This young metal ensemble, formed by five musicians from across the country, was established in Shenzhen and is now based in Beijing. In 2012, as champions of the WOA Metal Battle China Finals, they performed at Wacken Open Air — the world’s largest metal festival — earning unanimous praise from European metal media. Led by vocalist Yutian, who studied overseas, the band, alongside like-minded comrades, is determined to blaze a new trail in today’s music scene. With entirely English lyrics, a Westernized yet distinctly Chinese musical style, fierce metalcore rhythms, and meticulously crafted melodies, they make their global ambitions clear. Having shared stages with international heavyweights like In Flames, Lamb of God, Heaven Shall Burn, and Unearth, their live performances are already top-notch. This spring, they’ll release their debut full-length album “From Omega back to Alpha”; given time, they’ll shine China’s metal light on the international stage.
