A volcano on the southern Philippine island of Luzon erupted this morning, spewing thick ash 500 meters high. At the time, many hikers were near the crater, resulting in at least 5 hikers killed and 7 injured. Mayon Volcano is located 330 kilometers southeast of Manila. Historical records show it has erupted 48 times in the past, but this eruption claimed multiple lives.
