In response to Typhoon Soudelor’s approach, Nantou County’s Disaster Response Center was activated at Level 1 this morning. Currently, there is still one hiking team of 10 people in the mountainous areas of Nantou, who are expected to descend this afternoon.
Typhoon Soudelor is intensifying and may bring strong winds and heavy rain. Yesterday, Yushan National Park announced a complete ban on all park entry activities and ordered hiking teams within the park to evacuate and descend.
According to the Yushan National Park Police Squad, there were 27 hiking teams and 112 people active within the Yushan park area yesterday. After being contacted and notified to descend, only one team of 10 hikers climbing the Central Mountain Range’s “Southern Second Section” remains in the mountains today.
The Nantou County Police Department’s Xinyi Precinct stated that this hiking team has accelerated their descent. If all goes smoothly, they are expected to come down through the Xiangyang Hiking Trailhead in Taitung County this afternoon. 1020712
