A man from Kaohsiung went missing yesterday after visiting “Liangshan Waterfall” in Majia Township, Pingtung. Rescue workers found his body lodged in a crevice at the bottom of the pool beneath the waterfall early this morning. Firefighters preliminarily determined that the man drowned after slipping into the water. (Reported by Lin Xianyuan)
The deceased was a 57-year-old man surnamed Chan, who frequently hiked at Liangshan Waterfall on weekends. Typhoon Soudelor passed through on July 14 with relatively mild wind and rain in Pingtung. The man went to Liangshan Waterfall again early that morning and has been missing since. The Pingtung County Fire Bureau deployed 32 personnel, including the Majia Fire Station, the Special Search and Rescue Team, and volunteer firefighters, to conduct the search. After an overnight effort, divers finally located the body at the bottom of the pool beneath Liangshan Waterfall early the next morning.
The Pingtung County Fire Bureau explained that the body was found wedged in a crevice at the bottom of the deep pool under the third tier of Liangshan Waterfall, and they believe the man slipped and fell into the pool, leading to drowning. The bureau stated that the third tier of Liangshan Waterfall is located in the innermost part of the area, with rugged terrain, narrow and slippery paths, and whirlpools in the pool below the waterfall—conditions that easily lead to accidents. In the past, there have also been incidents where people grilling or playing in the water slipped and drowned.
