The Pingtung County Fire Bureau received a report from the public around 9 a.m. today (the 11th), stating that a 50-year-old female hiker surnamed Gan had accidentally fallen 30 meters down a valley at a location 1.1 kilometers up Dawu Mountain in Taiwu Township. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found she had no breathing or pulse. It was not until around 5 p.m. that she was transported down the winding mountain path.
The woman was a member of the Central Taiwan Wahaha Mountain Friends Club, and there were 24 people in her group. They had only just begun hiking up the mountain this morning when she lost her footing and fell. Due to thick fog in the valley at the time, helicopters were unable to take off, leaving rescuers to rely on a ground-based operation. By the time she was rescued, she had sustained a head laceration and multiple fractures in her limbs, and was found to have no signs of life.
