Separate mountain climbing accidents on Mǎjiǎn Mountain and Dōngmǎo Mountain of the Guanguan Seven Peaks in Heping District, Taichung City, on the 28th, resulted in one death and one injury. A 48-year-old man surnamed Yang collapsed and went into shock while climbing Dōngmǎo Mountain, likely due to a heart attack. When air rescue personnel reached him, he had no breathing or pulse and was airlifted down the mountain by helicopter. Meanwhile, a 42-year-old woman surnamed Chen experienced dizziness and discomfort while climbing Mǎjiǎn Mountain. She was rescued by firefighters and taken to Dongshi Branch Farmers’ Hospital, where she recovered after emergency treatment.

A 42-year-old woman surnamed Chen was climbing Mǎjiǎn Mountain with her husband yesterday. Less than an hour after starting the hike, at the 2.1-kilometer mark of the trail, she suddenly lost consciousness. Her husband immediately called 199 for help. Huang Lái..., the captain of the Heping Branch of the Taichung City Fire Bureau, said that when rescuers reached the female patient at noon, she had regained consciousness and mentioned a history of arrhythmia. Due to limb weakness, she was unable to walk down the mountain with assistance.

Rescue personnel secured Chen in a basket stretcher using ropes and transported her to the trailhead using a wheelbarrow-style carrier before transferring her to Dongshi Farmers’ Hospital by ambulance.

Hospital staff stated that when Chen arrived, she was conscious but had weakness in her right limbs, suspected to be caused by a stroke. She was not in critical condition and was transferred to Changhua Show Chwan Hospital after initial treatment.

Separately, around noon yesterday, the Taichung City Fire Bureau received another report: a 48-year-old man surnamed Yang, who was hiking with a group on Dōngmǎo Mountain, suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness at the trail’s triangulation point, likely due to a heart attack. His companions called for help and performed CPR, but were unable to restore his breathing or pulse.

Firefighters dispatched rescue personnel to the mountain and requested air support from a helicopter. At 2:57 p.m., Yang was hoisted into the helicopter, but he had already shown no signs of life. After landing at Dongshi Riverside Park, he was transferred to Dongshi Farmers’ Hospital. Hospital staff reported that Yang had no obvious external injuries and was clearly deceased before arrival. The cause of death is pending examination and confirmation by the prosecutor.
