The wife of Hong Wen-bin, deputy battalion chief of the Second Battalion of the Taipei City Fire Department, and their family of four were hiking on the Kite Beak and Shaolai Trails in Heping District, Taichung City this morning. While descending near the 31-kilometer mark of the Daxue Mountain area, Hong’s wife accidentally slipped and fell into a valley. The Taichung City Fire Department dispatched two vehicles and seven personnel for the rescue operation. Rescuers have now reached Mrs. Zeng, who suffered multiple fractures in all four limbs, visible head injuries, and is in critical condition with impaired consciousness.
The Taichung City Fire Department received a report at 5:45 p.m. today from the Nantou County Fire Department about a woman who had fallen into a valley in Daxue Mountain, Heping District, and was awaiting rescue. When the emergency operations center contacted the reporting man, they discovered he was a fellow firefighter—Hong Wen-bin, currently serving as the deputy battalion chief of the Second Battalion of the Taipei City Fire Department—and that the injured person was his wife.
Hong Wen-bin told police and firefighters that he, his wife, and their two children had gone hiking on the Kite Beak and Shaolai Trails this morning. On their way back in the evening, near the 31-kilometer mark of Daxue Mountain, his wife accidentally fell into a 150-meter-deep valley. He calmed down their two children, then climbed down the slope alone to reach the deep valley, found his wife, and stayed with her until rescuers arrived.
The Taichung City Fire Department stated that at 6:30 p.m., they dispatched two vehicles and seven personnel for the rescue. Four support personnel from the A-ma Mountain Work Station of the Forestry Bureau arrived first and helped take care of the two children. Due to the remote location of the valley and the long distance to the nearest hospital, the fire department also activated an emergency medical response mechanism, dispatching Dr. Huang Tailin from China Medical University Hospital to assist in treatment.
Rescue personnel reached Mr. and Mrs. Hong around 10 p.m. After assessing her condition, they found that Mrs. Zeng had no signs of life, with multiple external injuries, fractures in all four limbs, and visible head trauma. Her injuries were extremely severe. After bandaging and stabilizing her, rescuers manually carried the stretcher and pulled her up to the forest road by 10:40 p.m. Emergency CPR was administered, and she was sent to the hospital for further treatment.
