To help travelers save on accommodation costs while still enjoying the convenience and fun of technology, Japan’s Huis Ten Bosch will officially open its smart hotel, “The Strange Hotel,” on July 17. This hotel not only employs various uniquely shaped “robots” as front desk staff, but also features numerous automated technological devices in the rooms, making the overall accommodation cost only one-third of that at other hotels.

At The Strange Hotel, guests can see high-tech service robots such as dinosaur robots and lifelike robots at the front desk; both check-in and check-out are self-service to reduce labor costs. Guests do not need keys to enter or exit their rooms but use a facial recognition system instead.

The room facilities also utilize emerging technologies — lighting is controlled by sensing human body temperature, and the air conditioning system uses radiant convection technology, delivering a full sense of futuristic technology.

Huis Ten Bosch stated that with the assistance of high technology, the hotel can significantly reduce personnel and electricity costs, passing the savings back to guests in the form of lower room rates. However, for environmental reasons, the rooms do not have refrigerators, and unnecessary facilities and accessories are reduced. Guests can also purchase pajamas and yukata according to their personal needs.
