Affected by the depreciation of the RMB? Tourism Bureau: The tourism industry remains relatively stable

The RMB has recently depreciated, affecting the entire Asian region. As for whether the depreciation of the RMB will impact Taiwan’s tourism industry or the willingness of mainland Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan, the Tourism Bureau remains optimistic.

Deputy Director of the Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and CommunicationsLiu Xilinstated that the tourism industry is relatively stable, so it is less affected. In addition, there are set quotas for mainland Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan, and group tours are already booked up to the end of August, so there shouldn’t be too much of an impact. Liu Xilin also pointed out that when the Japanese yen depreciated in the past, the main factor affecting Japanese tourists’ willingness to visit Taiwan was seat supply and demand, with exchange rate factors playing a smaller role.

Additionally, some travel agency operators who manage tours to the mainland and mainland Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan have privately stated that due to the current instability of the exchange rate, both cross-strait operators are still observing whether there will be a need to adjust costs or tour prices.
