Lao K had been keeping an eye on Xide Charcoal Grilled Sandwiches even before they opened because it’s close to his home. He did some online research beforehand and found out that Xide Charcoal Grilled Sandwiches originates from Tainan. This branch is the first franchise in Neihu, but after the typhoon, Lao K completely forgot about it XD. By the time he remembered, they had already been open for a week.

The store is located near Lane 66, Wende Road.

The decor is pretty similar to a typical breakfast shop.

There’s actually quite a variety here. Most charcoal grilled sandwich shops only offer sandwiches, but this place also has burgers, toast, Danish toast — all the bread is charcoal grilled. You can also choose from egg pancakes, wraps, noodle soups, and fried snacks.

They also have set meals and pasta options. On the day Lao K visited, they were out of cucumber, so many flavors of grilled sandwiches weren’t available. He went with the Pork Loin Cutlet Egg Toast Set Meal, which came with a small drink. He upgraded to a large Earl Grey tea for an extra 10 NT$, and also ordered a hot dog and Martian potato patties to try.

If you’re someone who has trouble making choices, you can take the menu to your seat and decide at your own pace XD

Pork Loin Cutlet Egg Toast Set Meal with Large Drink (75 NT$): Their drinks are larger than those at most breakfast shops — about the same size as large cups at bubble tea stores, roughly 700CC. So if you don’t drink much, the small cup should be fine. Lao K’s Earl Grey was half sugar, not too sweet, and the flavor was okay.

The Pork Loin Cutlet Egg Toast comes with two slices of toast. The pork loin inside is fairly thick, and the egg is soft and runny.

The toast is very soft with a subtle smoky aroma. The pork loin was more tender than expected — Lao K thought the thick cut might need more chewing, but it was surprisingly easy to bite into. Thanks to the marination, the savory taste was great, and paired with the egg, it was really tasty. Since it's from Tainan, the flavor leans a bit sweet, but not overly so.

Hot Dog (15 NT$), Martian Potato Patties (20 NT$): Time for the fried items. Lao K thought serving them together would work better — otherwise the two plates looked a bit empty XD.

The hot dog is pretty standard, just like what you’d find at most breakfast shops.

The Martian potato patties have a crispy outside and soft inside, and while they’re a bit sweet, adding ketchup makes them better. These are pretty good. After the sandwich, how about trying a burger? When asked, the staff recommended the Spicy Crispy Chicken Leg Burger, so Lao K went for that one XD.

After a short wait, the burger arrived. When Lao K opened it, he saw it wasn’t very big XD.

It’s about the same size as the ones from Laya Burger, which Lao K often eats.

Let’s see what’s inside. The chicken leg patty is topped with a sauce that looks a lot like Thai spicy sauce.

The burger is also charcoal grilled. The bun itself has a decent texture — not as soft as the toast, but with a bit more firmness. The chicken leg patty is super crispy on the outside but still juicy and tender on the inside. The sauce really is Thai spicy sauce, with a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy that complements the fried food. But there seems to be an additional tangy and slightly spicy note too.

Lao K only noticed the yellow mustard when he opened the bottom half — it adds even more flavor to the whole thing. This one’s good too.

Lao K’s Tips:
It’s great that there’s delicious grilled sandwiches in Neihu now, with quite a diverse selection too. The only downside this time was that many flavors weren’t available, but fortunately the Pork Loin Cutlet Egg Toast and Spicy Crispy Chicken Leg Burger were both really tasty. Although the price is a bit higher than your average breakfast shop, the cost of charcoal grilling is higher, so it’s understandable. Interested folks should give it a try.
