The university I attended is located on a mountain in Taipei—yeah, you know the one. From my freshman to junior year, many classmates and seniors shared their experiences encountering the “yB,” and every time I heard about someone accidentally running into them, I felt a twinge of relief: at least I’d never had such an encounter.

But sometimes you really can’t be too cocky. In my senior year, I encountered one in the school elevator... I just remember it was a cool afternoon, a rare windless day on the mountain, and I walked into Building N, which houses both administrative offices and classrooms, to take the elevator up to the 5th floor for class.

The elevator arrived. I stepped into the empty lift, with no one behind me. Inside the school elevators, there are two rows of floor buttons on either side of the doors. After pressing 5, I faced the elevator door, resting my shoulder casually against the left wall as I waited for the doors to close automatically.

Just as the doors closed, I idly looked around—and suddenly noticed that, somehow, the button for the 12th floor on the right side had lit up by itself. But at that moment, I was the only person in the elevator, and after pressing 5, I’d kept my distance from the buttons, so there was no way I could have touched it. That realization sent chills down my spine, and I didn’t dare turn around. I could only silently plead: I’m just here for class, please stop at the 5th floor so I can get to my classroom.

When the 5th floor arrived, the doors opened. While muttering “thank you” to myself, I quickly stepped out of the elevator without daring to look back. For a while afterward, I tried to avoid taking the school elevators alone as much as possible...
