The Chinese cuisine chain "Gyudon no Oukura," which sells 2 million dumplings daily in Japan, launched in Taiwan in April. Its first Taiwanese outlet opened at Kaohsiung Hanshin Dome, and although its prices are significantly higher than those of local potstickers, it has still attracted a solid customer base. Meanwhile, the 2nd branch, located at the main building of Kaohsiung Hanshin Department Store, will open on November 22.
Although the 2nd branch isn’t opening in northern Taiwan, the Gyudon no Oukura social media team recently revealed on Facebook that expansion plans for central and northern Taiwan are already underway. Previously, the Japanese parent company of Gyudon no Oukura injected 50 million New Taiwan Dollars into its Taiwanese subsidiary, likely to support future expansion needs.
Founded in Kyoto in 1967, Gyudon no Oukura gained immense popularity by adapting Chinese cuisine to Japanese tastes. Its signature dishes include Japanese-style dumplings and Tianjin rice. By 1985, it had opened 300 stores; by 2007, that number had grown to 500; and by 2015, it reached 700 stores. As of 2017, the chain has expanded to 720 locations nationwide. The company went public in 2005 and became a member of the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations in 2014.
