In recent years, the number of passengers at Taoyuan International Airport has been steadily increasing, but existing equipment and facilities have struggled to keep up with this growth. Taoyuan International Airport is one of Asia’s more profitable airports, but with continuous technological advancements, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have gradually been unable to accommodate the growing passenger volume. To overcome the current bottlenecks, the airport company is taking a gradual approach and continuously conducting rolling reviews, with the goal of transforming Taoyuan Airport into a fully smart airport in the future.

Fei Hong-chun, General Manager of Taoyuan Airport CorporationOn the 24th, he personally appeared at the Ministry of Transportation to explain the “Taoyuan International Airport Smart Transformation Plan.” He stated that Taoyuan Airport will fully commit to becoming a smart airport, from the renovation and expansion of Terminals 1 and 2, to the construction of Terminals 3 and 4. This also includes actively introducing smart terminal technologies such as self-check-in systems and automated baggage sorting, as well as fully establishing an ICT system for the smart airport. These efforts aim to continuously enhance Taoyuan Airport’s competitiveness. It is expected that after 2020, the airport will handle 50 million passengers annually, with a long-term goal of reaching 100 million passengers.

In the future, using the self-check-in system and self-service baggage drop-off system, the initial check-in process will only take 90 seconds. Taoyuan Airport will also significantly increase the number of security screening lines to speed up the process. From completing security to boarding, the entire procedure is expected to be reduced from at least 30 minutes to just 15 minutes—cutting the time in half. After the completion of the T2 expansion and renovation in 2018, the target is to further reduce this to 12 minutes.

The “Taoyuan International Airport Smart Transformation Plan” includes several forward-looking initiatives:

1. Setting up the first self-check-in system and 4–10 self-service baggage drop-off systems at Taoyuan Airport’s A1 Station.
After completion in 2016, in addition to extending the functionality of the A1 Station as an extension of the airport terminals, passengers will be able to complete self-check-in and baggage drop-off in just 90 seconds. It is estimated that this will increase the annual passenger check-in capacity by 1 million.

2. Expanding Terminal 2, which will increase the total floor area by 50%.
This includes adding 56 self-check-in machines and 32 self-service baggage drop-off systems; security screening lines will increase from 8 to 20, and transfer security lines will go from 5 to 8. Floors 4 and 5 will also feature new commercial service spaces such as airport view restaurants, museum zones, VIP lounges, transit hotels, and capsule hotels, helping to increase the airport’s profitability.

3. At the MFB East Building of Terminal 3, a dedicated group check-in area and 30 group check-in counters will be set up first.
It is estimated that this will allow for an additional 1,000 passengers per hour and increase the annual passenger capacity by 3.75 million. The area is expected to open in the third quarter of 2018.

4. Constructing a new, smart Terminal 4, which will fully adopt the latest smart terminal technologies.
Terminal 4 will be connected to the Airport MRT’s A12 Station and will target business travelers and independent backpackers. It will feature the latest self-check-in and self-service baggage drop-off equipment. The goal is to complete and open the terminal in 2019, adding an annual passenger capacity of 5 million.
