Guam Announces 2016 Events: Street Closures for Food, Starlight Marathon & More

From the second half of 2015 to 2016, the Guam Visitors Bureau announced today (23rd) a variety of upcoming international and local events, such as a starlit dawn marathon, mouthwatering street food festivals, world-class indigenous cultural celebrations, and fashion-forward shopping festivals with unbeatable discounts — all providing valuable references for travelers interested in visiting Guam.

The Guam Shopping Carnival, running from November 1 to February 15 next year, invites travelers to embrace fashion in the most budget-friendly way; the Ko’ko’ Road Race, starting at dawn on November 8, includes a 4-person half marathon relay and individual half marathon events. Participants will race toward dawn amid breathtaking scenery. With China Airlines adjusting its Thursday flight schedule to Guam starting October 25, more overseas marathon enthusiasts are expected to join the event.
Yan Defen, representative of the Guam Visitors Bureau Taiwan Office, said: “Guam, no bigger than two Taipeis, is packed with vibrant colors and a rich variety of experiences.”The 2016 Guam events are mainly divided into three categories: cultural and large-scale carnival events, including the quadrennial 12th Pacific Arts Festival, the Guam International Music Carnival, the Guam Open-Air BBQ Party, and the Guam Shopping Carnival.
The second category is sporting events — also the most numerous — featuring international competitions such as the 4th Guam International Marathon, the Guam Ko’ko’ International Marathon, and the Guam Cycling Tour, as well as diverse athletic activities like women’s golf tournaments, triathlon championships, and the Cocos Island Swim. The final category offers the perfect opportunity to experience local Chamorro culture, such as mango festivals hosted by local villages.

Key 2016 Events Promoted by the Guam Visitors Bureau
XTERRA Guam Triathlon Championship (March 19)
This endurance triathlon held on the beautiful island of Guam not only offers a $15,000 prize but also grants amateur qualification for the international championship to be held in Maui in late October. The XTERRA Guam Triathlon includes a 1.5 km swim, a 34 km bike ride, and finishes with an 8.2 km trail run.
4th Guam International Marathon (April 10)
Organized by the Guam Visitors Bureau, Pacific Islands Resort, and United Airlines, the Guam International Marathon kicks off on April 10. It features full marathon, half marathon, 10 km, and 5 km categories — get ready with your friends and family. All races start and finish at Governor Joseph Flores Memorial Beach Park.
Guam International Music Carnival (April 22–23)
The 3rd Guam International Music Carnival will feature top bands and musicians from the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and Guam, ready to deliver spectacular performances at the Agana Shopping Center. This will be the largest music celebration in Guam’s history — welcome all music lovers from near and far to join in the fun.
12th Pacific Arts Festival (May 22–June 4)
Since 1972, the quadrennial Pacific Arts Festival has gathered artists and traditional culture bearers from Pacific Island nations for a two-week celebration. Regarded as the region’s premier cultural event, it allows indigenous peoples from various islands to connect and enhance mutual understanding. In 2016, Guam will showcase its treasured Chamorro culture, preserved through centuries of colonization and modernization.
Guam Open-Air BBQ Party (July 2)
The Guam Visitors Bureau will close streets to host the Guam Open-Air BBQ Party. Come taste the most authentic local dishes and experience the Hafa Adai spirit of Guam. Local master chefs will serve delicious grilled cuisine, along with live performances by local musicians and traditional dancers.
Guam Ko’ko’ International Marathon & Kids Fun Run (October 29–30)
The Guam Ko’ko’ International Marathon is a classic event on the island, featuring a half marathon and a 4-person relay. Named after Guam’s native bird, the Ko’ko’ Bird, this event attracts thousands of runners from Asia, the U.S., and Guam — offering a fantastic chance to enjoy the scenic western coast. The family-friendly Guam Ko’ko’ Kids Fun Run offers 0.6 km, 1.6 km, and 3.3 km categories for children aged 4 to 12. Each participating child receives a T-shirt and a finisher’s medal, while the top three in each group win gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Guam Shopping Carnival (November 1 – February 15)
The Guam International Shopping Carnival kicks off every November and lasts for three months. Travelers from around the world can enjoy unexpectedly great shopping discounts from November to February — a shopping paradise for families and couples alike.
