Designed and built by Scottish civil engineer and architect Thomas Telford, the bridge spans the River Conwy near Conwy Castle. Completed in 1826, it replaced a ferry that had operated at the same location. Telford’s design ensured that the bridge’s supporting towers matched the style of Conwy Castle’s turrets, creating a visually harmonious landmark. The bridge is constructed on the rocky outcrop where the castle stands, so close to the fortress that parts of the castle had to be demolished during construction. Walking across the Conwy Suspension Bridge, with the River Conwy flowing beneath and the majestic Conwy Castle rising ahead, is a truly breathtaking experience.
