Nanni Temple
Introduction Situated in the northern part of Kangma County, Shigatse, about 12 kilometers from Gyantse County. It was built during the Tubo Dynasty and has a history of over 1,200 years. The temple once adhered to the Nyingma and Kadampa sects, but now follows the Gelug school. During the height of the Nyingma influence, the temple had six colleges (Zhashangs) and nearly ten thousand monks. In 1904, when British troops invaded the Nanni area, a hero stepped forward, wielding a large Tibetan knife to kill the British commander and rescue many civilians and monks. The temple’s main deities are the trio of Sakyamuni. The main prayer hall houses a thangka depicting Sakyamuni’s bathing ceremony. Every year on April 15th, the temple holds a three-day Cham dance festival.
