The towering Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England and has the longest nave in all of Europe, stretching approximately 160 meters. Construction began in 1079, and it has hosted many significant events, including the coronation of Henry the Young King, son of Henry II. The city also attracts many visitors as it is the resting place of the renowned British novelist Jane Austen. The ancient Bishop's Palace, dating back to 1110, was where Queen Mary I and her husband, Philip II of Spain, had breakfast on their wedding day. Other notable local attractions include the medieval castle, the weathered city walls, the Gothic Revival-style Winchester City Hall, and the City Museum near the cathedral, all of which tell the story of the city’s rich history. In addition, the local arts center, Chesil Street, and the Art and Design Market are also worth a visit.
