Shuangjiang Ancient Town

The Shuangjiang Ancient Town scenic area is located 8 kilometers from Tongnan District. The town was first built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, nestled against the Silver Dragon Mountain to the north, backed by Golden Dragon Slope to the south, and facing the surging Fu River to the east, with the Houxi River winding around the mountains like a jade belt around the waist. The streams and mountains embrace the ancient town on two levels, creating distinctive landscape features. Known as "Little Chongqing," the town features narrow lanes, gray bricks, blue tiles, grand mansions with carved beams and painted rafters, clusters of green bamboo, and ancient banyans that cast deep shade—vividly exuding an ancient charm, fragrance, and poetic elegance, while reflecting profound historical heritage and cultural richness. The "Eight Ancient Scenes of Shuangjiang" are hailed as one of the "Top Ten Scenic Spots of Chongqing."
After more than 400 years of development and preservation, the town has accumulated a rich cultural legacy. The convergence of diverse cultures has formed a uniquely charming ancient town culture, earning it recognition as one of Chongqing’s Top Ten Historical Towns and among China’s First Batch of Top Ten Historical and Cultural Towns. The town is blessed with remarkable individuals and has been the birthplace of Yang Angong, one of the 100 martyrs of the People’s Republic of China, and [Fourth President's Name]—the Fourth President of the People’s Republic of China.
The area boasts abundant historical and cultural relics, including over 20 large-scale residential complexes from the Qing Dynasty, such as the Sijitang Residence (Yang [Name]'s Former Home), the Yang Angong Former Residence, the Yuwang Palace, the Yuantaihe Compound, and the Yang Family Residences. It also preserves important war-related sites such as the barracks (a training and mobilization base for Sichuan troops during the War of Resistance Against Japan), the auditorium, and the "Chungcheng Room" and "Generals’ Building"—specially constructed residences for Chiang Kai-shek and Bai Chongxi—which were relocated here in 1942 from the Army Mechanized School.
Shuangjiang Ancient Town is a hub for Sichuan opera, with a long tradition of folk arts such as waist-drum dancing, yangge (rural dance), Buddhist chants, lion dances, storytelling, qianjinban (percussion storytelling), carving, embroidery, calligraphy, and paper-cutting.
