In 1950, the people of Ruijin renovated the well in preparation for the visit of the Central Southern Old Revolutionary Base Area Visiting Delegation and named it the "Red Well." A wooden sign was erected beside the well, inscribed with the words "Drink the water, never forget those who dug the well; always think of Chairman Mao," expressing the gratitude and remembrance of the people of Shazhou toward Chairman Mao. Later, the wooden sign was replaced with a stone stele.
Shazhouba is located 3 kilometers west of Ruijin City, Jiangxi Province, and is one of the revolutionary heritage sites in Ruijin. It features a well preserved to this day—the Red Well. Key attractions include: the former sites of the Central Executive Committee and the People's Committee, the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic, and the Central Revolutionary Military Commission. At the entrance of Shazhouba Village stands a large tree that takes several people to encircle. Shazhouba was once an arid area where it was difficult to irrigate fields, and even drinking water was scarce. The Red Well was dug during the Soviet Area period under the personal leadership of Mao Zedong and local cadres and villagers.
