Miaoli Fayun Temple

Fayun Temple is located at the confluence of the Dahu and Wenshui rivers, surrounded by mountains and water, with beautiful scenery. It is one of the four major Buddhist sacred sites in early Taiwan.

The temple architecture is simple and elegant, with thick glazed tiles paired with snow-white walls. Towering ancient pines and banyans stand around, enhancing its serene and solemn atmosphere. The 9-foot-tall white jade Buddha in the main hall was donated by Venerable Hongzong from Singapore and is the largest jade Buddha in Taiwan, further adding to the temple’s fame.

The square in front of the hall offers a great view: verdant peaks lie ahead, while villages such as Wenshui and Shuimei are nestled at the foot of the mountains, with the Wenshui River meandering through them, creating a pastoral scene. Behind the main hall, the garden features gnarled old pines that stretch out like umbrellas, with Japanese-style corridors winding among them. Strolling through the woods, you can hear only the chanting of sutras and the tolling of bells, bringing peace to both mind and soul.

Transportation Directions: Take a Xinzhush客运 bus bound for Dahu or Zhuolan from in front of Miaoli Railway Station, get off at the Wenshui bus stop, cross the Pei’an Bridge, and walk about 1.6 km up the road to reach the temple.
