The site of the Soviet Government of Bachixi District (the Fifth District) of Hongjiang County, Sichuan-Shaanxi Province, is located in Liziyai, Bachixi Village, Beiba Town, Nanzheng County.
In early 1933, under the leadership of -, the Fourth Red Army marched westward from Hubei, Henan, and Anhui, then turned south through Hanzhong into Sichuan, liberating Tongjiang, Nanjiang, and Bazhong (collectively known as Tong, Nan, and Ba). Soon after, a workers’, peasants’, and soldiers’ representative conference was convened, establishing the Sichuan-Shaanxi Revolutionary Base Area and the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Government to comprehensively lead the workers and peasants in overthrowing local tyrants and redistributing land. In February, Commander Wang Shusheng and Political Commissar Zhang Guangcai of the 70th Division of the Red Army arrived in Beiba to establish the Fifth District of Hongjiang County and the Soviet Government of Bachixi District, Hongjiang County, Sichuan-Shaanxi Province, with their offices set up in the Wumiao Temple of Bachixi. The establishment of the Soviet Government played a significant role in building the people's armed forces, turning the Beiba region into a solid gateway to the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area. For a period, the County Economic Committee (including the County Finance Bureau and the Workers’ and Peasants’ Bank) was also located in Beiba, where a workers’ and peasants’ paper mill and a plowshare workshop were established. The market flourished, currency was produced, and industrial and agricultural production developed. At that time, the military and civilians worked together, making substantial contributions to supporting the Red Army in defeating the Sichuan warlords Tian Songyao, Yang Sen, Liu Xiang, Deng Xihou, and Liu Cunhou. Initially, the Soviet Government of Bachixi District was stationed in the Wumiao Temple at Liziyai, together with the Township Soviet of Bachixi, before relocating to Nianziping, and later back to Liziyai.
One night in late December 1934, reactionary leaders Zhao Tianjun and Zhu Youshou led bandits in a surprise attack on the Soviet residence at Liziyai, Bachixi District. Fifty wounded Red Army soldiers and Xiaoqu Secretary Xian Kuimo, Zhu Shixiu, along with 74 others, were brutally massacred. The Wumiao Temple housing the District Soviet Government, with its three courtyards and over a hundred tiled rooms, was also burned down by the enemy.
Deputy Commander Wang Shusheng of the Fourth Red Army and Political Commissar Zhang Guangcai of the 31st Red Army, along with other cadres and masses of the Soviet Area, planted 74 fir, pine, and cypress trees on the charred ruins to symbolize the unyielding, steadfast, and upward spirit of the 74 martyrs.
This site was designated as a county-level key cultural relics protection unit by the Nanzheng County People’s Government in March 1981.
