The Red Army Stone Slogans of Beiba are located in the Beiba mountainous area of Nanzheng County. Surveys have identified a total of 61 stone slogans created by the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army between the winter of 1932 and the spring of 1935, as well as 4 ink-written ones. These are mainly distributed in Qianjin (formerly Zhujia Ba) and Ronghua villages in Beiba Town, and in Diping Village of Fucheng Township (Chengjia Ba).
Ten li southward along the eastern riverbank from Ronghua Village on the west side of Zhujia Ba Street, at a place called Mangshe Tan — the border area connecting to Chaoshui Ba Township of Tong County, Sichuan Province — there are 28 existing Red Army stone slogans along the mountain path on the east bank of the river, arranged from north to south.
In the old Yue Lou (theater) and Guan Di Temple within the government compound of Fucheng Township (formerly Chengjia Ba), four Red Army stone slogans are engraved on an old stone stele. Seventy li to the south, in Diping Village, there are 29 (at 28 locations) Red Army stone slogans on the cliffs. Four ink-written Red Army slogans are found on the door plank of villager Wu Yongzheng’s home in Mingshanwan Village, Fucheng Township.
Chairman Mao said, “The Red Army is a propaganda team and a sowing machine.” Wherever the Red Army went, they actively promoted the Party’s policies and mobilized the masses to understand, join, and support the Red Army, carrying out active revolutionary activities. As a result, over the two-plus years in our county, they left behind massive stone slogans (rare in the nation) in great quantity. The larger slogans cover an area of about three square meters, the smallest around one square meter, and most characters are about 400 square centimeters in size.
Among the 61 existing Red Army stone slogans in Nanzheng, their content can be divided into three main categories:
16 slogans mobilize workers and peasants to join and support the Red Army.
23 slogans call on the people to eliminate warlords such as Liu Xiang and Tian Songyao.
26 slogans promote the Red Army’s political slogans.
Most of the stone slogans bear the names of the issuing units, mainly including the Political Department of the Fourth Red Army, the Political Department of the Ninth Red Army, the Political Departments of the 25th, 30th, 31st, and 33rd Red Armies, the Political Department of Hongjiang County, the Political Department of the Northwest Military Region, Ding, Ding Yi, the Sichuan-Shaanxi Provincial Committee, and the Chinese Soviet.
