The Huma River, a major right-bank tributary of the upper Heilongjiang (Amur) River, is situated in the northwest of Heilongjiang Province. During the Qing Dynasty, it was known as the “Huma’er River” (also written as 瑚马尔, or “Huma’er”) and the “Kuma’er River,” later shortened to its present name. The Huma River Protected Area encompasses the river itself along with the adjacent hills, mountains, marshes, and alluvial plains. The Huma River originates from the northern slopes of the Greater Khingan Mountains, around the Dabule and Bowula mountain ranges. It is part of the Heilongjiang river system, with 118 first- and second-level tributaries, and a total main channel length of 3,357 kilometers. The river basin covers an area of 76,085 square kilometers. The water area is home to a rich diversity of rare and endangered wildlife species.
