Bilo Snow Mountain is a massive mountain range situated between the Lancang River and the Nu River, serving as the watershed between the two. The mountain is home to countless alpine lakes of various sizes and pristine forest landscapes, which function both as natural reservoirs and popular tourist destinations.
Deep within the heart of Bilo Snow Mountain lie numerous high-altitude glacial lakes. Most of these lakes are located at elevations above 3,500 meters, with the highest reaching nearly 4,000 meters—areas rarely visited by humans. During the transition from spring to summer, temperatures gradually rise. As the snow and ice on the mountain melt, flowers bloom wherever the snow recedes, creating a vast sea of blossoms stretching from the mountainsides to the lake shores. The crystal-clear, azure lakes reflect the endless primeval forests and expansive blue skies. Among the most distinctive features are the alpine rhododendrons, which grow in tangled mats, densely clustered, often blooming while remnants of snow still cling to their branches and leaves. From a distance, they resemble flames dancing wildly in the wind. The best time for mountaineering here is from April to October each year. During this season, locals head up the mountain to gather herbs, collect orchids, and fish for snow trout in the lakes. The area abounds in valuable medicinal plants such as caterpillar fungus, fritillaria, ganoderma, cicada flower, and coptis. The icy lakes during this period also serve as a concentrated habitat for wildlife. As spring arrives and flowers bloom, animals gather here in herds to forage, drink, and give birth.
No one has accurately counted just how many alpine lakes there are, but locals will tell you there are far too many to ever explore them all. Some of the larger ones include Laowo Mountain Sacred Lake, Heart-Cleansing Lake, Rhododendron Lake, Red Maple Lake, Heaven-Cleansing Lake, Jade Water Lake, and Red Flower Lake. Due to the rugged terrain, few people pass through, so many lakes remain undiscovered and unnamed to this day.
Perhaps you’re an avid backpacker or trekker. Guided by a spirit of adventure, you might hike along the ridgeline of Bilo Snow Mountain—and any additional lakes you discover could very well be named after you.
