Except on Mondays, a large handicraft fair is held here around 4 p.m. every Tuesday to Sunday. Many small vendors sell a wide variety of items, with quite a comprehensive selection and good quality. These include various leather garments, belts, and bags. On weekend evenings, many artists perform here, including free concerts and live puppet shows.
After the earthquake in 1861, the surrounding area was rebuilt as a new urban district. As a result, four other squares—San Martín, Chile, Italia, and España—are located at the four corners of Independence Square, each about two streets apart. In addition, the square is surrounded by the Julio Quintanilla Theater, a national school, the Independencia Theater, the provincial legislature, the Park Hyatt hotel, and a small modern art museum. So visitors will definitely not find themselves bored here.
Also, Argentina’s annual Grape Harvest Festival is held in Independence Square. Visiting during this time will make your trip even more unforgettable.
