Tongatapu Island
The southernmost Tongatapu Island is the most vibrant and the largest island in Tonga, accounting for roughly one-third of the nation’s landmass. Tongatapu is the main island of the Kingdom of Tonga, with the capital Nukuʻalofa located on this island. Covering a total area of 259 square kilometers, Tongatapu serves as the economic and transportation hub of Tonga. The island features vast plantations of coconuts and bananas, while the nearby Eua Island is covered by dense tropical rainforest. Tongatapu is a flat coral island with an elevation of only about 10 meters. Over millennia, the ceaseless waves have eroded the coral coastline into thousands of bizarrely shaped blowholes that connect directly to the sky—these are the world-famous "Blowholes." When the tide rises, seawater surges through these holes, shooting dozens of meters into the air before crashing back down to the ground, creating a dazzling and spectacular sight in the sunlight.
