Quebrada de Humahuaca follows the main cultural route known as the Camino Inca, stretching along the spectacular valley of the Río Grande, from the cold desert headwaters in the Andes to its confluence with the Río Leone, 150 km to the south. This region has functioned as a major trade route for the past 10,000 years. It was a gathering place for prehistoric hunting groups and bears traces of the Inca Empire from the 5th and 6th centuries, as well as evidence of battles fought for independence during the 19th and 20th centuries, giving it significant historical value.
