Yunji Peak
Introduction Yunji Peak is situated in the western part of the Huangshan Scenic Area. It is one of the 36 major peaks, with an elevation of 1,645 meters. The peak is named “Yunji” (Cloud’s Edge) because it is often surrounded by drifting clouds, and its steep summit pierces the sky. When dark clouds descend and shroud the surrounding mountains, Yunji Peak alone frequently floats above the cloud sea, hence its name. On the peak lies the Cangyun Cave (Hidden Cloud Cave). From a distance, the cave entrance is usually veiled in mist. A Ming Dynasty anonymous poet wrote: “A wisp of cloud atop the peak, emerging from Hidden Cloud Cave; the world seeks sweet rain, but don’t drift into the King of Chu’s dream.” The clouds at the peak may originate from this cave, a natural phenomenon caused by special air currents rising from within.
