Ouro Preto

　　    The name "Ouro Preto" comes from the fact that the gold mined here contained the metal element palladium. Palladium has the property of absorbing gases, which gives the surface of the gold a blackish sheen, hence in Ouro Preto... The discovery of Ouro Preto was purely accidental. In the late 17th century, an expedition set out from Taubaté to raid the indigenous people of Minas Gerais.
