Corcovado Mountain (also known as Hunchback Mountain or Christ the Redeemer Mountain) rises 710 meters above sea level and is located within Tijuca National Park in Rio de Janeiro. The mountain is covered with ancient trees and remains lush all year round. Its first nickname comes from its humpback-like shape, resembling the raised back of a hunchbacked person. The second name originates from the towering statue of Jesus with outstretched arms in the shape of a cross atop the mountain, hence also called Christ the Redeemer Mountain. The massive statue of Jesus can be seen from virtually every corner of the city and is one of the iconic symbols of Rio.
The statue was built in 1931, standing 30 meters tall (equivalent to a 13-story building) and weighing 1,145 tons. Its head alone is 3.75 meters high and weighs 30 tons; the distance between the tips of the outstretched fingers is 28 meters; the area of both arms is about 38 square meters, weighing 114 tons; the base of the statue spans 100 square meters. Both road and a mountain railway provide direct access to the summit. On clear days, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the entire city of Rio and its coastal beaches.
