Jianshi Erectus Site
The Jianshi Erectus Site is located in Group 5, Mazhabaping Village, Gaoping Town, Jianshi County. The site is a limestone cave with two entrances, one on the east and one on the west. Between 1970 and 2000, nine excavations were carried out here, yielding five fossilized teeth of early hominins, as well as stone tools, bone implements, and fossilized remains of over 80 species of mammals, including Gigantopithecus blacki. Based on geological and paleontological analyses, the site dates back to the Early Pleistocene, approximately 2.5 to 1.2 million years ago.

The Jianshi Erectus Site is one of the earliest paleoanthropological sites in China. It is the first discovery in the country where fossils of hominins and Gigantopithecus were found together, providing physical evidence for research on the phylogenetic relationship between Gigantopithecus and human evolution, convergent variation during primate development, and the process of evolving into humans.

In 2006, it was designated as part of the sixth group of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level by the State Council.
