The museum aims to provide enjoyable and thrilling experiences of past and present sea adventures, while also preserving New Zealand’s maritime heritage. Voyagers have collected numerous maritime-related natural history items during their journeys, reflecting New Zealand’s seafaring history from its earliest Polynesian inhabitants to the present day. The collection primarily focuses on Polynesian and Māori voyaging vessels, European maritime exploration, settlement and immigration, early coastal trade, whaling, modern maritime transport, maritime trade, as well as maritime art and handicrafts. Key items include ships, nautical equipment, ship models, books, maps, and artworks—all of which bring New Zealand’s maritime history to life.
The Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, with the last admission at 4:00 PM. It is open year-round except for Christmas Day, and the entire visit can be completed in about two hours.
