  Kunsthalle Bremen was founded in 1823. The building it is housed in was built in 1849 and has been expanded multiple times over the years. It was listed as a cultural heritage site in the German register of historic buildings in 1977. The museum houses a collection of European paintings from the 14th century to the present, sculptures from the 16th to the 21st century, as well as new media art. It is the only private museum in Germany with an extensive collection of artworks spanning from the 14th to the 21st century.

  The painting collection mainly features works from Western Europe, with the most notable being 19th- and 20th-century French and German oil paintings. The collection includes outstanding works by renowned masters such as Paul Cézanne, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Van Gogh. The prints and drawings, primarily from the 15th to the 20th century, comprise approximately 22,000 pieces, including hand-drawn illustrations, watercolors, and etchings. This collection is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and is highly regarded. The new media art section features works by artists such as John Cage, Otto Piene, Olafur Eliasson, and Nam June Paik.
