Within Tijuca National Park (Parque Nacional da Tijuca), there is a natural landmark that often goes unnoticed — Pedra da Gávea, which abruptly rises at an altitude of 842 meters and is indeed striking. However, there are other factors that make Pedra da Gávea one of the most famous attractions in Rio de Janeiro.
Aside from the breathtaking views from its natural viewpoint, many legends surround Pedra da Gávea. Some believe it to be an entrance to another dimension, a UFO base, or even the tomb of the ancient Phoenician royal family. From a distance, Pedra da Gávea appears to have the shape of a head, with ears, eyes, a nose, and a mouth. In hard-to-reach, secluded areas, there are carvings believed to be marks left by the Phoenician kingdom. However, important archaeological sites and the ruins of what was once a place where black slaves were held have also been discovered there.
