Lake Hauroko and its surrounding areas remain largely untouched by human activity, preserving their pristine state. The lake water is crystal clear with gentle ripples, and the reflections of brightly blooming flowers along the shore add to its beauty. The winds on the lake can be quite strong, so caution is advised when boating. According to locals, this was once regarded by the Māori as one of the most sacred places; there are stories of people disappearing without a trace while boating on the lake. The government has built a long bridge leading to the lake to allow visitors to better admire this deep body of water.
The most pleasant way to enjoy Lake Hauroko is to wear a sun hat, sit quietly on the bridge, dip your feet into the clear lake water, and gaze at the serene lake and its beautiful surroundings with a peaceful mind, soaking in the coolness it brings.
