The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. Construction began in 1848 and was completed in 1884. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., it stands on the axis between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. This 169-meter-high marble obelisk is inlaid with 188 commemorative stones donated by individuals, organizations, and governments from around the world, including one inscribed in Chinese, which was a gift from the Qing government. The surrounding area features lush green lawns that often host events. Inside the monument, there are 50 flights of iron stairs as well as a high-speed elevator that takes you to the top in 70 seconds. From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
