Butterflies are the most commonly seen animals here. Thanks to the vast tropical rainforests in the Wuzhishan area, which provide ideal conditions for the habitat, growth, and reproduction of butterflies, the mountainous rainforest region centered around Wuzhishan is home to over 600 species of butterflies, accounting for 50% of all butterfly species in China. Of these, 70% are ornamental butterflies, known for their large size, vibrant colors, and unique appearances. Among them, seven rare and precious species include swallowtails, brush-footed butterflies, and whites, while the most beautiful swallowtail species alone number 48, making up 51% of the national total. As such, butterflies are a major highlight of the Wuzhishan forest scenery. If you’re willing to visit Wuzhishan, these colorful, graceful little creatures are sure to bring you plenty of joy. Imagine encountering various yellow, black, and multicolored butterflies fluttering and playing among the jungle as you hike; or resting on a stone bench under flowering trees when you’re tired from climbing, only to have butterflies land gently on your shoulders like flower petals. This experience will surely help you forget the hustle and bustle of the city and make you feel the warmth and gentleness of nature.
The Wuzhishan Butterfly Ecological Farm has now been preliminarily established, and beautiful swallowtail butterflies have been successfully bred on-site. Moreover, the farm has extensively transplanted and expanded three major types of plants: parasitic plants, nectar source plants, and ornamental plants. A first phase of cultivation has successfully grown 50,000 high-quality plants across 20 flower varieties, covering an area of 200 acres. As a result, when you step into the Wuzhishan Butterfly Ecological Farm, you’ll be greeted by the fragrance of flowers everywhere, with bees flying and butterflies dancing, truly making you feel like you’re in an ocean of flowers and a world of butterflies. The ecological farm officially opened to visitors in 2006.
