The Marble Pagoda of Many Treasures in the Summer Palace

The Marble Pagoda of Many Treasures in the Summer Palace is situated in the Tibetan-style architectural complex on the northern slope of Longevity Hill within the Summer Palace in Haidian District. The 16-meter-high pagoda features a seven-story octagonal structure, entirely built from glazed tiles. Its walls are adorned with relief carvings of Buddha statues, and every three levels from the bottom up include vertical rectangular windows. Each level has eaves, resulting in a design that combines pavilion-style and dense-eave features. However, the overall form reaches up to fifteen levels. The interior of the pagoda is solid and not open for climbing. The base of the pagoda is designed in various shapes including square, hexagonal, octagonal, and dodecagonal forms. This style of pagoda was popular during the Sui and Tang dynasties, and further developed during the Liao and Jin periods, with the octagonal base becoming the most common.
