Xiangshan Glazed Pagoda
The Xiangshan Glazed Pagoda is located in Xiangshan, Haidian District. It is a seven-story octagonal pavilion-style pagoda standing over 30 meters tall. Its eaves project outward, and each level features windows, distinguishing it from a closely-tiered pagoda. At the tips of the eaves hang 56 bronze bells that chime together in the wind. The walls are adorned with glazed bricks, giving the structure an attractive appearance. An internal staircase forms a gallery that allows visitors to climb the pagoda. Built in the 45th year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign (1780), the pagoda was commissioned when the 6th Panchen Lama came to Beijing to celebrate the Qianlong Emperor’s 70th birthday. For this occasion, the emperor constructed the “Zongjing Dagao Temple,” within which the pagoda was erected. In 1900, during the attack on Beijing by the Eight-Nation Alliance, the temple was destroyed, leaving only this glazed pagoda intact.
