Built along the river, Lugujia Ancient Town was established in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties and served as an important market town on the route from Shaanxi into Sichuan. At the iron cable bridgehead, a shop building forms a visual conclusion to the landscape. The town features gable-and-hip houses, small quadrangle courtyards, deep courtyards, and wooden frames as one of the main structural elements. The well-preserved ancient streets showcase distinctive architectural characteristics of southern Shaanxi and the Bashan region. The old streets twist and turn with a mortise-and-tenon structure, and households are separated by firewalls. Doorways and windows are exquisitely carved, with the overall architecture being scientifically sound, uniquely laid out, and harmoniously integrated with the surrounding landscape of mountains, waters, bridges, and trees — all reflecting the wisdom of the laboring people. Viewed from across the river, the town’s continuous tiled roofs are nestled among the trees, while the stone-paved riverbanks form three different elevation levels, adding vibrancy and richness to the riverside scenery. Silver-colored TV antennas on the rooftops add a touch of modern life, and a group of white geese swimming in the river completes the most common view of this ancient town.
