Hejiawan Site

      Era: Neolithic Age

The Hejiawan Site is situated in Sanhe Village, Gucheng Town, approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Xixiang County, on the second terrace of the right bank of the Jingyang River, about 10 meters above the riverbed.

Excavated between October and December 1980, the site stretches about 300 meters from north to south and 150 meters from east to west, covering a total area of 45,000 square meters. The excavated area was 610 square meters. Over 600 stone, bone, and pottery artifacts related to production and daily life were unearthed. Additionally, more than 20 remnants of dwelling sites from the Yangshao Culture period, one hearth pit, 115 storage pits, and 25 tombs were discovered. At the time, it was the largest, best-preserved, thickest-stratified, and richest in artifacts among all prehistoric sites found in southern Shaanxi.

In another excavation on April 14, 1982, a complete bone-carved human head was discovered. It is currently the earliest known bone-carved human head in China and is an extremely precious piece of bone carving art.

In May 2013, it was designated and announced by the State Council as part of the seventh batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

The Hejiawan Site is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
