Renmin University of China

        Renmin University of China, abbreviated as "RUC," is a university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly established by the Ministry and the Beijing Municipal Government. It is among the first group of universities selected for China's "Double First-Class" Initiative (Class A), the "211 Project," and the "985 Project." It is also a member of the World Universities Alliance, the International Association of Applied Technology Development, the Asia-Pacific International Education Association, and the Beijing-Hong Kong Universities Alliance. The university has been included in national initiatives such as the "Strengthening Basic Disciplines Plan," the "111 Project," the "2011 Plan," the Excellent Legal Talents Education and Training Program, the Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talents Education and Training Program, the China National Scholarship for International Students, the New Engineering Research and Practice Project, and is a designated institution for receiving Chinese Government Scholarship international students. It is a comprehensive research-oriented national key university with a primary focus on the humanities and social sciences.

        Renmin University of China is a comprehensive research-oriented national key university primarily focused on the humanities and social sciences, with some programs in science and engineering. The campus boasts enchanting scenery—nearly a hundred magnolia trees bloom proudly in spring, while over 500 ginkgo trees turn golden in autumn. The university traces its origins to the Shaanbei Public School, founded in Yan’an during the War of Resistance against Japan. It went through several phases, including the North China United University, the Northern University, and the North China University, before finally settling in Beijing in 1950 and being officially named “Renmin University of China,” becoming the first comprehensive national university of New China. The institution has nurtured a large number of leaders and social elites for the country. Its current goal is to cultivate students as “role models for the nation and pillars of society.”

        The university’s predecessor was the Shaanbei Public School, established in 1937, followed by the North China United University and the North China University. On December 16, 1949, the Government Administration Council of the Central People’s Government passed the “Decision on the Establishment of Renmin University of China.” On October 3, 1950, Renmin University of China, formed through the merger based on the North China University, officially opened its doors, becoming the first new-type regular university founded in New China. In 1954, it was designated as a comprehensive university with a focus on the social sciences and one of the first national key universities; in 1960, it was reaffirmed as a comprehensive national key university; and in 2017, it was included in the national "Double First-Class" construction list.
