Longnan is situated at the southernmost edge of Jiangxi Province, adjacent to Heping and Lianping counties in Guangdong, and is known as the "Southern Gateway of Jiangxi." With over a thousand years of history since its founding in the 11th year of the Baoda era of the Southern Tang Dynasty (953 AD), it is the original homeland of Hakka people from Fujian, Guangdong, and overseas. Three major transportation arteries—the Ganzhou-Guangzhou Expressway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway, and National Highway 105—intersect here. The county has a population of 300,000 and covers an area of 1,641 square kilometers. It enjoys distinct seasons, a pleasant climate, beautiful landscapes, and a captivating culture. The majestic Xiaowudang Mountain features 99 Danxia peak forests stretching endlessly, like a ten-mile scroll slowly unfolding; the subtropical primeval forests of the Jiulianshan National Nature Reserve are enchanting, home to rare birds and animals, and renowned as the "Jade of the Nanling Mountains" and the "Kingdom of Flora and Fauna"; the Jade Rock Immortal Crag (Yangming Academy) stone tablet forest recreates the teachings of sages like Wang Yangming; the Longtoutan Waterfall cascades down impressively, rivaling the Sandie Spring of Mount Lu; and the "earthen forts" rich in Hakka charm evoke endless reverie... Across this 1,600-square-kilometer land, the wonders of nature and the long-standing human history have created many magical and magnificent natural landscapes and Hakka cultural scenes. Visiting Longnan, you can touch the pulse of Hakka history; visiting Longnan, you can wander through a sea of green... Hakka walled houses are tangible carriers of Hakka culture, preserving ancient Central Plains customs and ways of life, and are the main architectural form of ancient Hakka residences. They integrate home, ancestral hall, and fortress, with walls built from blue bricks or granite, making them highly defensible and sturdy. Southern Jiangxi features predominantly square-walled designs, and in terms of quantity, scale, unique style, and preservation, Longnan ranks first in the nation. On October 25, 2007, it was recognized by the Shanghai Guinness World Records as the "County with the Most Hakka Walled Houses." Typically three to four stories high, the larger ones have nine buildings and eighteen halls, with features including grain storage, wells, drainage systems, lawns, and stages. Representative examples include Guanxi New Walled House, Yangcun Yan Yi Walled House, Liren Liyuan Walled House, Yangcun Yan Yi Walled House, and Taojiang Longguang Walled House.
