"Five-Leaves-Together" Scallions

Scallions are rich in nutrients, spicy and aromatic, making them not only edible on their own but also an excellent seasoning. They not only enhance the flavor of dishes and remove fishy odors but also stimulate appetite, making them one of the indispensable vegetables in people’s daily lives.

Our county produces a large quantity of "Five-Leaves-Together" scallions. This variety is a high-white scallion that was developed over many years from local farmer varieties by the Baodi County Onion and Garlic Research Association and has been designated as an agricultural branded product by the Tianjin Municipal Government. It gets its name "Five-Leaves-Together" because during its growth, it consistently maintains five green leaves spread out like an open hand, with upright leaves and the lateral leaves on either side of the central leaf being of equal height. The outstanding advantages of this variety are:

1. Tall plant with thick, long white stalks. The plant height reaches 120–150 cm. The white stalk diameter is 3–5 cm, the length is about 45 cm, and the weight per plant is 0.4–1 kg.

2. High yield. Excellent commercial traits; it grows rapidly and yields highly, with an average yield of up to 5,000 kg per mu, and a maximum of 7,000 kg per mu.

3. Wide adaptability. This variety outperforms other locally cultivated varieties in cold resistance, heat tolerance, drought resistance, and waterlogging resistance.

4. Good taste. The white stalk is plump, tender, non-sprouting, with a mildly sweet and spicy flavor, delicious both raw and cooked.

5. Strong storability. The storability of this variety has unparalleled advantages over other varieties—it can be stored until April of the following year, making it the best variety for eating dried scallions in winter.

The Baodi County Vegetable Company has established a 200-mu breeding base and uses the mature plant breeding method to produce over 4,000 kg of "Five-Leaves-Together" high-quality seeds annually, supplying them to the county and more than ten provinces and cities such as Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Shanxi for introduction and cultivation. Currently, the planting area of "Five-Leaves-Together" scallions in our county remains at around 50,000 to 70,000 mu year-round (with over 100,000 mu introduced in other regions), with a commercial volume of 180,000 tons, annual sales of 144 million yuan, making it the largest economic crop in terms of planting area in our county.
