Fragrant Japonica Rice
Fragrant Japonica Rice is produced in Qingpu, Shanghai. It has the following characteristics: 1. Leaf fragrance. The leaves emit a pleasant aroma from the seedling stage, becoming especially strong during the heading and flowering periods. When cooking aged rice, farmers add a small amount of Fragrant Japonica Rice leaves, which turn the rice grains green and greatly enhance the fragrance; 2. Rice fragrance. During threshing and sun-drying, the fragrance in the field is delightful, and even the rice straw carries a pleasant scent. The rice has no belly-white or heart-white areas, is clear and glossy, with a pearl-like color, resembling sparkling jade; 3. Cooked rice fragrance. Both steamed rice and congee exude a rich aroma, especially the latter, leading to the saying “One family cooking congee fills ten households with fragrance.” Hot rice is soft and palatable with good stickiness, while cold rice retains its original flavor even after multiple reheats. When used in pastries, it is smooth when hot and sticky yet not gluey when cold, crisp when dry without cracking. It is highly nutritious, containing abundant protein, starch, iron, calcium, amino acids, and more. It is an excellent tonic suitable for the elderly, children, the weak, and postpartum women, with benefits such as promoting blood circulation, invigorating energy, strengthening the body, and nourishing kidneys. Adding longan, red dates, and lotus seeds to congee enhances its nourishing effects. Regular consumption can improve appetite and is quite effective in treating heart disease and cardiovascular conditions.
