Xiangmashan Rice
Xiangmashan Rice is a protected geographical indication product.
Mulan County is a national commodity grain production base county. In 2015, the county achieved its “thirteenth consecutive year of increased grain output.” Rice harvests were also bountiful, with 1.12 million mu (approximately 74,667 hectares) of paddy fields—covering 60% of the county’s arable land—producing 600,000 tons of rice and 460,000 tons of milled rice annually, generating an annual output value of 2 billion yuan. Meanwhile, a 500,000-mu national-level green food raw material rice production base also passed the national approval and acceptance with high scores.
For many years, Mulan County has committed its full resources to developing a “green industry base,” aiming to foster an excellent ecological environment. The county refuses to introduce highly polluting enterprises and is fully dedicated to protecting the rice-growing environment. High-quality rice is mainly produced in the flat, fertile alluvial plains of the Mulan River and Baiyangmu River, as well as mountain valley plains, which are free from industrial pollution. These areas have abundant groundwater reserves and distinct seasonal climate changes. The favorable ecological environment, unique geographical features, and suitable climatic conditions have nurtured the superior quality of “Xiangmashan Rice”—nutritious, safe, with a high rate of whole head rice and a pure, fragrant taste. Especially notable are its high levels of amylose content and gel consistency, which set it apart from other rice brands, making it uniquely competitive.
Mulan County consistently upholds the development philosophy of being green, circular, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly, making “Xiangmashan Rice” famous for its “green safety.” These efforts have not only led to continuously rising yields of “Xiangmashan Rice,” but also helped it secure a strong position in the consumer market as a trusted, high-quality rice. Now, Mulan County is striving to have “Xiangmashan Rice” recognized as a “national geographical indication protected product,” aiming to establish it as a renowned Chinese brand.
Mulan County has a long history of rice cultivation, spanning over 100 years. In the 1930s, the rice planting area reached 58,380 mu, marking the first peak in rice development. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the county’s paddy field area continued to expand, surpassing 100,000 mu by 1958, with a total output of 33.29 million jin (approximately 16,645 tons). Xinmin and Mulan Towns set a record yield of 533 jin per mu and sent representatives to attend the National Agricultural Labor Model Conference in Beijing, where they were commended by the State Council. This greatly enhanced the reputation of Mulan rice and further boosted the county’s confidence in developing rice cultivation.
The production area of Xiangmashan Rice covers the current administrative region of Mulan County, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province.
