Yalo is a pelagic fish species found in cold-temperate plain regions. It prefers to live in clear, slow-moving or still waters, often inhabiting rivers, lakes, or calm water bodies with gentle currents. It swims swiftly and actively, and tends to gather in schools, especially during spring and summer when water temperatures gradually rise, often foraging in shallow waters. In winter, when water temperatures drop, it overwinters in deeper areas. It is an omnivorous fish, feeding on diatoms, filamentous algae, aquatic insects, and similar food sources. It generally reaches sexual maturity at three years of age, with males maturing slightly earlier. It has the habit of migrating upstream to spawn. From late March to early April, after the ice thaws and during the peach blossom flood season, it swims against the current to spawn upstream.
